When is the Best Time to Visit Nairobi?
The best time to visit Nairobi is during the dry seasons, which typically occur from late December to March and from July to October. These months offer pleasant weather with warm days and cool nights, perfect for exploring the city and its surrounding attractions. During the dry seasons, you can enjoy clear skies and optimal conditions for wildlife viewing in Nairobi National Park and other nearby reserves. It's also an excellent time to embark on cultural tours, visit museums, and indulge in outdoor activities like hiking or exploring the vibrant markets.
If you prefer cooler temperatures, the months of June and July provide a refreshing break from the heat, although it's worth noting that these months can be slightly colder, especially in the mornings and evenings. Avoid visiting during the long rainy seasons, which typically occur from April to June and from October to early December. Heavy rains can disrupt travel plans and make outdoor activities challenging.
That being said… we visited Nairobi for a few days in June 2024 (towards the end of the rainy season) but had excellent weather! It was not miserably hot, and we only had rain for part of one of the days. We were able to take advantage of discounted rates on accommodations and fewer crowds at popular tourist spots. Visiting during the shoulder seasons can definitely be a worthwhile strategy for budget travelers who want to experience everything Nairobi has to offer.

Take a Traditional Kenyan Cooking Class
One of my favorite ways to get to know a new culture I’m visiting is through food. I love doing this by taking a cooking class with a local to learn their traditional dishes and styles of cooking. We had a fantastic time with Nimoh in this traditional Kenyan cooking class and visit to the market when we visited in June. She was so accommodating and kind when she welcomed us into her home, and she even allowed us to store our luggage there during the class as we were heading directly to the airport afterward. She helped us navigate a ride on a matatu, the chaotic public bus system throughout the city. We walked through the market and helped pick out local greens, fruits, and other vegetables to complete our meal.
Back at her home, we began to make a goat curry, Ugali (the national dish of Kenya), Kachumbari (an East African tomato, avocado, and onion salad that slightly resembled pico de gallo), and steamed local greens with a tomato sauce. Everything was incredible, and Nimoh’s extensive knowledge of traditional Kenyan cooking styles was incredible to witness. We finished our meal by trying some fresh local fruits like cherimoya and passion fruit.
Learn How Coffee is Made at a Coffee Farm
After three weeks of safaris and camping in the African bush, we were excited to try something different. This Coffee farm and factory tour to the Fairview Estates was the perfect way to spend a day relaxing before flying home from our trip. We were picked up from our accommodation by Tim, a very helpful and friendly local who would be our driver and guide for the entire day. He studied history in university, and was very happy to share his knowledge about his country with us from culture, government, politics, and more.
Once we arrived at Fairview Estates, we were give a brief history of the 100+ year-old production facility that employs over 70 Kenyans year-round. We even got to try our hand at picking coffee from the tree to then be produced into the product that we see on shelves. I really enjoyed the thorough tour and overview of the production facility, where we learned the different stages that the coffee goes through before it becomes the recognizable bean that is brewed. To cap off the tour, we were given the opportunity to taste several different roasts and guess which one we thought we were tasting. Finally, we were given a carafe of our favorite brew, complete with cream and sugar and cookies to enjoy with views of the beautiful gardens.
Feed the Giraffes at the Giraffe Center
If you are not able to stay at the Giraffe Manor during your trip to Nairobi, you can visit the Giraffe Center next door, where the giraffes from the Manor go to rest during their off time. Created by the African Fund for Endangered Wildlife in 1979, the Giraffe Center is home to to Rothschild’s and other species of giraffes. For the admission price of $15, you are able to feed the animals a coconut husk full of giraffe pellets from their browsing area. Educators are also on hand in this area to provide education about the animals and the conservation efforts of the Center. Apart from the browsing area, the Center also has a tea house with views of the giraffes and a gift shop to pick up traditional Kenyan handicrafts, with 90% of the proceeds from sales going to the care and feeding of the giraffes. After you are done visiting the giraffes, consider exploring the Center’s nature trails, a 2 kilometer path snaking all the way down to the Gogo River and its source, the Ngong Hills. On the way back, you will pass by the Warthog Den, allowing you to see warthogs up close and personal. I would allow yourself 2 - 2 ½ hours to enjoy both the Giraffe Center and the nature sanctuary.
Stay at the Giraffe Manor
I know I already mentioned it above, but seriously… staying at the Giraffe Manor is an absolute DREAM. Experience afternoon tea and breakfast with giraffes! I mean, what’s not to love? The manor itself, a beautifully restored 1930s colonial-style mansion, exudes charm and elegance. Guests are greeted by these gentle giants, who often poke their heads through windows during breakfast and tea time, creating unforgettable moments of interaction and photo opportunities.

See the Migration in Masai Mara
One of the Wonders of the Natural World, the Great Migration is truly an incredible sight to behold if you are lucky enough to witness it. Occurring between July and October each year, nearly 2 million wildebeest and zebras make the journey from Serengeti National Park in Tanzania to Masai Mara National Park in Kenya. When we visited in July, we were able to see a small portion of the beginning of the Migration in the Serengeti, but I cannot even fathom seeing the pinnacle in Masai Mara. Eat at Carnivore Restaurant
I love a unique dining experience whenever I am traveling. We usually pick one unique restaurant to try in each country, and in Kenya we picked Carnivore. At Carnivore, guests are treated to a feast of different meats, including beef, chicken, lamb, pork, and exotic game meats like ostrich and crocodile, all roasted to perfection and carved tableside. The "all-you-can-eat" experience allows diners to indulge in a wide array of flavors, accompanied by freshly baked bread, salads, and traditional Kenyan side dishes. We were also greeted with dawas, the national cocktail of Kenya made with sugar, lime juice, honey, and vodka. Portions of different meats kept coming to our table until we eventually lowered the small white flag on a toothpick that was perched atop our table. It was a good time, and for roughly $40 per person, exactly the unique dining experience we were hoping for. You will definitely want to make a reservation for this one, as availability fills up quickly!
Ride a Matatu
I typically don’t consider public transportation as a ‘must-do activity’ for any place I visit, but the matatus in Nairobi are an exception. These privately-owned minibuses or vans, often brightly colored and adorned with unique artwork, music, and neon lights, provide an affordable and convenient mode of transport for millions of Nairobi's residents and visitors. Each matatu typically has a designated route and operates like a shared taxi, picking up and dropping off passengers at various points along its journey. The experience of riding a matatu is distinct, characterized by lively interactions, loud music, and a sense of community among passengers. Except, the only way to tell where the bus is going is based on the colors painted on the side. A red/white matatu could be going an entirely different direction than a white/red matatu. And seemingly the only way to figure out these routes is through personal experience. I don’t recommend trying to figure out the system yourself, but if you have the opportunity to ride with a local, you have to take it.
